There is no question that the issues that surround small Organic family farming all over the world and in this case in Latin America are in many ways similar. Their incapacity to access markets, lack of government support, constant uncertainty of their economic future, impossibility of keeping their families farming organically, especially their children, is for all of them part of their every day constant struggle to keep up the organic movement in many communities through out our planet, and most important to our interest is the incapacity to access the international markets with our own finished products.

In the case of Costa Rica it is not any different. At any given opportunity we have of interacting with our Organic farming communities we hear the same struggles repeated over and over.

The Alliance of Organic Farmers of Costa Rica and Sol Colibri have been working on providing answers to this situations that are also reflected in the different settings where our Organization gathers in Latin America to discuss our ventures, challenges and difficulties to manifest our goals.

The Fair Trade economic system has been the most important experience our Organizations ever had to recognize the real interest the international consumers community have in providing with the means to support small family farming Organizations in the Global South.

Sol Colibri is a different presentation of the Fair Trade economic model, that, using the emerging understanding in Developed Countries of what it means to support Small Family Farming by giving access to direct marketing and by facilitating the tools to produce value added products as a way to bring more profit to those very communities of farmers.

If looking at the value stream of any given product, it is for all of us very clear that it is in the value added products where more of the net profit is held, and it is also very apparent that most of the value added products are made in other places in the world, in this case Developed Countries, rather than in the places where most of those agricultural products are grown in the Global South.

Sol Colibri is the generous possibility for those consumers interested in supporting and buying valued added products made and finish by our community of farmers in the very place where those crops are grown, our Countries.
